panel discussion

The event will be held in English.

Panel discussion: Dr. Edita Gzoyan (Director AGMI), Regina Galustyan, (Research Assistant, AGMI), Prof. Elke Hartmann (FU Berlin)

Presented by Dr. Roy Knocke

The Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923 was one of the first genocides of the 20th century. This atrocity included the systematic extermination of approximately 1.5 million Armenians and resulted in the near annihilation of the entire Armenian population in their historic homeland. Despite overwhelming historical evidence, the Armenian genocide remains denied, particularly by the Republic of Turkey. Germany, an ally of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, did not officially recognize the genocide until 2016.

The panel will address the legal and ideological aspects of the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923) and discuss its role in Armenia's current culture of remembrance.

The event takes place in cooperation with the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute (AGMI, Yerevan) and the Max Weber Network Eastern Europe.
